Ecosystem-Based Adaptation and Restoration

Ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) and ecosystem restoration are nature-centered approaches that harness the power of ecosystems to address the impacts of climate change and promote resilience in vulnerable communities. These strategies recognize that healthy ecosystems provide essential services that support human well-being and protect against environmental threats. Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EbA): Nature as a Shield: EbA focuses on using natural systems such as wetlands, forests, and coastal habitats to reduce the vulnerability of communities to climate change impacts. These ecosystems act as buffers against floods, storms, and other hazards. Biodiversity and Resilience: EbA emphasizes the importance of biodiversity in building resilience. Diverse ecosystems are more robust and better equipped to withstand environmental changes. Livelihoods and Sustainable Development: EbA integrates climate resilience with sustainable development by promoting practices that enhance ecosystem health while providing livelihood opportunities for local communities.

Ecosystem Restoration:

Reversing Degradation: Ecosystem restoration involves actively rehabilitating or replanting degraded ecosystems to improve their health and functionality. This can include restoring degraded forests, wetlands, grasslands, and coral reefs. Enhancing Ecosystem Services: Restored ecosystems provide a range of ecosystem services, including clean water, habitat for wildlife, carbon sequestration, and enhanced soil fertility. Climate Mitigation: Restoration efforts contribute to climate mitigation by sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and helping combat global warming. Human and Wildlife Benefits: Ecosystem restoration benefits both humans and wildlife by creating healthier, more resilient habitats.
